‘Ohana is one of the most significant groups in
Hawaiian music history and played a major role in the
Hawaiian Music Renaissance of the 1970s. They were contemporary,
yet celebrated the traditional Hawaiian culture. They
were not afraid of putting their unique interpretation
on someone else’s song and making it better. |

These three musicians brought out the best in each other
musically. They became the gold standard by which every
group and musician in Hawai‘i was measured. Thirty
years later their music is still making an impact on the
next generation of musicians. The Hui ‘Ohana created
heavenly harmonies, haunting melodies, soaring falsettos
and instrumental solos. Close your eyes, feel the gentle
trade winds and be suddenly transported to these magical
islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
This anthology draws from the middle part of their recording
career; the years 1976 to 1978, arguably the Hui ‘Ohana’s
finest. Ono, Hawai’i
Tahiti, and Aloha Pumehana were
produced by noted record producer Bill Murata and include
the classic “Hanalei Moon,” “Magic Islands”
and the much requested “Happy Anniversary.”
Ledward Ka‘apana and his twin brother Nedward Ka‘apana
along with their cousin Dennis Pavao all went on to successful
solo careers. Together they were the Hui ‘Ohana
and they created magical music that will last forever. |
