The
Makaha Sons is truly one of the most entertaining groups
in Hawai’i. For nearly three decades, they have
championed our Hawaiian music, performing it in their
inimitable style. That the Sons have brought such pleasure
to so many fans both here and beyond Hawai’i with
their non–stop touring is a testament to their unique
talent.
The Makaha Sons has their roots in the Makaha Sons of
Ni’ihau, the seminal Hawaiian group of the mid-70s
in the van of the Hawaiian Music Renaissance. The group
endured changes over the years as members passed on or
left for other careers. They became simply the Makaha
Sons after band member Israel Kamakawiwo’ole left
to pursue a solo career in 1994.
The Sons have recorded six albums in a span of seven years.
Their Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning albums Ke
Alaula, Kuikawa, Christmas
Day in Hawai’i Nei, Live on the
Road, Golden Hawaiian Melodies
and Na Pua o Hawai’i were released
between 1994 and 2001. Add this to the 11 that the Makaha
Sons of Ni’ihau released and you have one of the
most prolific recording groups in Hawai’i.
Heke wale no – Only the Very Best of the Makaha
Sons is an interim record to recap the extraordinary
musical accomplishments of this remarkable group up to
this point. Expect to see the release of a volume two,
and even volume three in the coming years: the Sons show
no signs of slowing down. This anthology includes the
very best music from five of their Na Hoku Award winning
albums.
Selections are indeed the very best from the award–winning
“Ke Alaula” to the ever–popular “Lahaina
Luna.” The comedic “The Pidgin English Hula”
share space with the beautiful “Hopoe.” And
songs from Live on the Road transport
the listener to a concert under the stars with all the
excitement. Innovative medleys, a hallmark of the Sons
repertoire, make up a third of the album so there are
actually 21 songs in this great collection! |
