In a new grouping, two tested musicians as Waipuna release their new recording Mana‘o Pili.  Kale Hannahs acoustic bassist of the award–winning group ‘Ale‘a and Matthew Sproat a past winner of Hawai‘i Island Falsetto Contest reach back into their respective musical experiences to produce a remarkable album showcasing their harmonies and individual voices.

The eclectic collection of songs highlights their versatility, range and broad appeal.  They bring a fresh perspective to traditional songs handed down through the years including “Papa Sia,” “Honomuni,” and ever popular “Kiss Me Love.”  And they have chosen songs like “Ali‘ipoe” and “Home Kapala” that have not been heard in a long while. The title song “Mana‘o Pili” composed by Diana Aki and Willie K‘s “Mälama Mau Hawai‘i” are two more gems from our recent past that have long been overlooked.

Two original songs “Lehua Mamo” co–written by Lïhau Hannahs and Kellen Paik and kumu hula Maka Herrod’s “Ka Ulu Niu O Waipouli” are destined to enrich our musical fabric. And both members reveal their songwriting skills in “E Pili Kaua” by Kale and “Home” composed by Matt. Rounding out album is the folk favorite “Owl’s Lullaby” long a part of the Sproat family songbook, and the country favorite “I Can see Arkansas.”

Friends and colleagues lend winning support:  John Cruz (harmonica and backup vocals), Chino Montero (guitar), Greg Sardinah (steel guitar), Aaron Salä (piano), Glenn Mayeda (guitar), Kellen Paik (‘ukulele) and Adriano Larioza (percussion). The digipack created by graphic artist John Matsuzaki wraps it all up with strong photos and stylish graphics.

A final note:  Waipuna is committed to perpetuating Hawaiian music and the hula.  Their live performances always feature dancers who enhance the musical experience. Many of the songs in this album were recorded with the dancers in mind.  But the listener need not know how to hula to appreciate this wonderful first outing by WaipunaMana‘o Pili belongs in every Hawaiian music lover’s collection.
